If you and your significant other opted for a romantic five-day getaway in Cape Town, how much would you be willing to spend?
Breaking down the overall costs of her and her plus one’s trip from Johannesburg to Cape Town in a video that went viral, TikTok user Thobi Mashitisho said R27 000 made up the total of their five-day stay. Suffice it to say, fellow TikTok users were shocked.

In the video, Mashitisho explained that the Airbnb accommodation for the five days amounted to R7 532. In a bid to save on travel costs, the couple opted for a long-distance bus which cost around R1 900. However, opting for a faster travel option, the couple took a flight back to Johannesburg for R4 250.
During their stay, Mashitisho said that it cost more than R3000 to move around in the Mother City via e-hailing services and approximately R800 to get to one of their activities. They also spent R260 for four hours on luggage drop services.
Mashitisho added that their activities included quad biking at the Atlantis dunes and a boat cruise for two, which cost them R1 200 and R589 respectively thanks to a promotional app. The couple also enjoyed a beach day at Clifton (one of the Mother City’s many free activities). However, they spent R70 on an umbrella.
When it came to food, Mashitisho confessed in the video that they spent more than R7 000.

Taking to the comment section to voice their thoughts, many TikTok users expressed that spending R27 000 for a local destination holiday seemed slightly exorbitant given that some international vacations, depending on the destination, could amount to the same price.
One user commented: ‘Cape Town is expensive 😭 to think I spent around R27k in Thailand for nine days’
Other users argued that a trip to Cape Town doesn’t have to be overly expensive with the help of a hack or two, with one user commenting: ‘Cape Town can be cheap when you use MyCiti or buy a City pass, try and purchase restaurant vouchers on Hyperli to avoid spending too much.’
