The Pot Luck Club brought small-plate fine dining to Cape Town before fine dining was even a thing. Since its opening in 2012, it has elevated the Mother City’s foodie clout from its high-rise glass tower in the middle of industrial Woodstock.

Like all Luke Dale Roberts establishments, The Pot Luck Club is a master at turning the concept of eating out into an event. And the Sunday Brunch Winter Extravaganza, as its name suggests, is no exception.
The experience includes a decadent ten-course menu, bottomless bubbles and a Bloody Mary bar where guests are encouraged to personalise their potion with the chef’s secret tomato juice, house-infused vodkas and a selection of flavourings, including Worcestershire pearls and bacon swizel sticks – we kid you not – that’s breakfast in a glass right there.
And, in true Dale Roberts fashion, everything is executed with the utmost style (there’s live jazz too) and professionalism. The waiters are masters of their craft and they are there to keep your glass brimming with bubbles and your taste buds dancing at the details they share with every dish.
To kick off the brunch, there are West Coast oysters, freshly shucked and dressed with Executive Chef Jason Kosmas’ weekly creation, delivering a briny burst of happiness to start the day. Oysters lead a succession of snack-sized courses packed with flavours to awaken the palate.
There is buttery brioche with quail egg, porcini hollandaise and mushroom duxelles; a lavish lobster ‘McMuffin’; and the comforting yet vibrant flavours of a curry lamb shank taco with parsnip cream and mint salsa. And that’s just a taster!
Following hot on the heels of the ‘snacks’ is what’s become something of a signature to Sunday Brunch: a Pot Luck rendition of the Arnold Bennett – an open omelette laden with smoked haddock. The salad course provides a moment of pause for the palate, with dishes inspired by what the season is serving.
This, of course, is in anticipation of the heartier main course, where Kosmas’ fondness for duck usually comes to the fore. Served family-style at the table with an array of sides, from beetroot tarte tatin to roast vegetables, this is the seminal moment of the menu.
Brunch ends with a pre-dessert of baked goodies from the pastry kitchen before a light, often fruity dessert to cleanse the palate and draw a line under a decadent day.
‘It’s a really unique way to discover and enjoy the food of The Pot Luck Club, and it’s proven hugely popular. We find this format works so well, and we put a lot of effort into creating new plates and tweaking old favourites,’ says Kosmas about the Sunday Brunch.
