Described as ‘the perfect way to reintroduce Shakespeare’s work to the youth,’ Baked Shakespeare has once again managed to successfully combine the rich Shakespearean history with customs deemed to be a bit more current. This time around, the troupe is performing The Two Gentlemen of Verona.

The acting troupe and winners of the 2023 Ovation Award at the National Arts Festival have returned to their roots in Cape Town. This performance will be their fourth production since being founded in 2021 by Jack Maisel. The show and the actors themselves have seen immense development since the first time they took to the stage in Much Ado About Nothing.
This Shakespearean comedy follows two friends on the brink of adulthood. Their journey encompasses adventure, betrayal and love. It all comes to a boil when the two set their sights on the same girl and chaos ensues.
However, the true plot twist lies in the inclusion of marijuana use on set. In a truly all-inclusive experience, audience members on arrival are allowed to vote for which two actors they’d like to see consume the most cannabis. The votes are then calculated prior to prologue and the fate of each actor’s performance becomes anyone’s guess.
All in all, this experience manages to be intellectually stimulating and to leave its audience cackling with a capital C. It makes for a perfect interactive night of theatre and is definitely not to missed.
