Unnerving images of the condition of the sea near Blouberg have resulted in plenty of conversation on social media, garnering theories and questions around the discolouration of the water.

While some speculation pointed towards pollution, a range of opinions cited Mother Nature for the water’s ominous appearance.
Raw sewage, an oil spill and industrial waste were all blamed for the discolouration while others believe that silt or water running from the mountain and mixing with the ocean following heavy rains were to blame.
Some pointed out that the earthquake a few weeks ago may also have been a contributing factor.
When fresh water meets sea water, the lighter fresh water rises up and over the denser salt water. Sea water noses into the estuary beneath the outflowing river water, pushing its way upstream along the bottom. This can result in a visible difference between the two.
