The infant’s mother allegedly left her daughter in the backyard of a Kuils River residence.
Alana claims that she was called by two men, who informed her that they had come across the abandoned child.
When she held the newborn, she noticed the baby’s body was cold and took the infant home, where she called both the police and an ambulance.
Community members provided information regarding a woman and a young boy seen in the yard in the early hours of the morning.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, said that the woman was eventually located and arrested on charges of child neglect and attempted murder. She is due to appear in Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court.
The newborn received medical care and has now been named Waleetha.
Alana asks the community to provide assistance in the form of nappies, formula, blankets and clothes.
The items may be dropped off at the Kuils River Police Station.
