The National Free Basic Electricity rate has been sanctioned at 194.40c/kWh for the 2024/2025 municipal financial year.
Among other things, this includes basic functions such as essential media access, lighting and basic water heating.
The beneficiaries of this implementation are mainly households that cannot afford the cost of basic municipal services.
In order to qualify, persons falling within this category will need to contact their local municipality and follow procedure. If successful, these beneficiaries are to receive vouchers for free electricity each month from Eskom. Monthly, there will be an allocated maximum of 60kWh per household.
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa continues to engage with all the relevant departments with regard to reviewing the 50kWh units per month in light of the change in economic conditions in recent years.
