In the past week, the City’s law enforcement agencies have detained 333 suspects and recorded 57 485 traffic and by-law violations, including several illegal street racers.

Two dozen people who were detained during an illicit street racing operation were among the arrests, and at least seven more people were found in possession of guns and ammunition.
Despite the numerous obstacles and demands, city law enforcement services have had another busy week with some notable successes.
Officers found multiple firearms in some of the most gang-ravaged areas, where the City is using all of its resources, in addition to the fact that the number of arrests for drunk driving has more than doubled.
This week will present additional difficulties as the anticipated effects of the weather will put a strain on both emergency and law enforcement systems.
According to Alderman JP Smith, a member of the mayoral committee for safety and security, ‘the public can help by being alert to their personal safety, on the road, and in their communities, but they can also report any potential risks as soon as possible so that they can be attended to.’

In response to complaints regarding illicit street racing, the traffic service conducted an integrated operation in Mitchells Plain on Saturday evening, July 6, 2024.
Authorities detained two drivers for unfulfilled warrants, made 21 arrests for driving under the influence and arrested a third person for having a stolen car.
Over the course of the last week, traffic officers recorded 51 855 offences and more than doubled the number of arrests they made each week, from 32 to 67.
A total of seven people were detained for various offences, such as possessing stolen vehicles, presenting false documentation, or assaulting an officer, while 57 people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Three arrests were made for reckless and negligent driving.
Additionally, 1 815 arrest warrants were carried out by officers, and 183 public transport vehicles were seized.
Over the course of the previous week, law enforcement officials issued 3 184 warnings for various infractions and made 191 arrests.
In Tafelsig, Manenberg and Hanover Park, LEAP officers found four guns and two zip guns; in Hanover Park, metro police officers found a gun; and seven suspects were taken into custody.
Officers from the Metro Police Department issued 2 446 traffic and by-law citations and detained 75 suspects.
This past weekend, the PECC received reports of 1 443 incidents, comprising 85 cases of assault and 40 cases of domestic violence.
In addition, call takers recorded 26 broken-down cars, 11 incidents of trees blocking roads, and 63 motor vehicle accidents.
