On Friday evening, a 38-year-old police sergeant was arrested on charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and domestic violence.

Brigadier Novela Potelwa says the suspect is alleged to have assaulted relatives in Deon Adams Avenue, Riebeek West. Internal SAPS disciplinary action has since been instituted.

‘The management of the SAPS in the Western Cape reiterates its commitment to deal with instances of gender-based violence in all its forms irrespective of who the perpetrator is,’ Potelwa adds.

‘It is disconcerting that the protectors of society are on the wrong side of the law at a time when our efforts to curb gender-based violence and femicide should be heightened,’ says Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt General Thembisile Patekile, adding that police officials ‘have to lead by example’ in this regard as crimes against women, children and vulnerable groups remain a priority for the SAPS.
