In response to Sunday World in Durban on Friday, Steenhuisen addressed tensions between the African National Congress (ANC) and DA, which are straining the government of national unity (GNU).

Central to the friction between the coalition’s key players is Zille, who maintains that the DA is the critical force keeping the pact intact.
Zille stated that this was documented, adding that President Cyril Ramaphosa cannot make a move without consulting the DA.
Her remarks irked the ANC leadership and reinforced the widespread belief that it’s Zille, not Steenhuisen, who is truly steering the DA from behind the scenes.
‘I’m the leader of the party and the only one who gives the direction and how we should participate in the GNU and nobody else. I deal with the relations in the GNU,’ said Steenhuisen.
He emphasised that the DA would not let negative tensions jeopardise relations within the GNU, describing the multi-party government as a vital national asset that must be safeguarded at all costs.
‘We must not be distracted with the utterances of individuals in all parties. I’m in the coalface. Bickering does not help anyone. Instead, it will allow the breakers in the form of EFF and MK Party to come in and break the GNU.’
The DA secured six cabinet posts in the GNU, including key portfolios like agriculture, public works, home affairs, and basic education.
Initially, the GNU included the ANC, IFP, and DA, but the ANC later invited smaller parties to join.
Steenhuisen, now part of Ramaphosa’s cabinet, highlighted his goal to boost agricultural output and empower women in the sector.
He dismissed critics who saw his appointment as a setback for agricultural transformation, vowing to prove them wrong.
