Update, 9:30am:
According to the Swartland Municipality, a dam located on a property known as Dassenberg breached, resulting in severe flooding to parts of Riverlands and Dassenberg, outside Malmesbury in the direction of Cape Town.
The West Coast Disaster Management and disaster management teams from the Swartland Municipality, including fire and rescue and law enforcement services are on site. Gift of the Givers is en route to provide humanitarian aid.
A joint operations centre has been set up at Riverlands Primary School.
Initial reports indicate severe damage to property and infrastructure in the area.
There are currently no reports of injuries or missing people however, this could change as teams reach out to areas blocked off by the water.
Rescue and mop-up operations were delayed and slowed until sunrise.
‘We call on all residents to remain calm and please give their full cooperation to officials on-site,’ the municipality said.
‘We are also aware of various rumours and unsubstantiated reports being spread, creating fear and confusion. We ask residents and outside parties to refrain from spreading fake news and unsubstantiated rumours.’
