MEC Anton Bredell highlighted the Act’s importance in protecting the environment and promoting economic growth.
‘The legislation reflects our commitment to environmental protection and economic opportunities. We aim to build a resilient Western Cape that can handle climate change challenges,’ Bredell said.
Premier Alan Winde noted the province’s vulnerability to climate impacts such as droughts, floods and coastal erosion.
He stressed the need to balance growth with environmental sustainability and expressed a desire to collaborate with other coastal provinces on climate issues.
MEC Dr. Ivan Meyer praised the Act as a result of significant expert efforts, underscoring its role in ensuring a sustainable future and aligning policies for climate response.
The Western Cape is committed to transitioning to a low-carbon economy, ensuring that policies align with the goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and promoting new job opportunities in this sector.
Bredell emphasised the importance of supporting vulnerable communities during this transition and integrating climate considerations into various aspects of governance and planning.
The Climate Change Act facilitates coordinated action across government levels and obligates District Councils to plan for climate change.
Bredell called for swift national implementation of the Act’s provisions and financing arrangements to support local-level climate actions.
