The City of Cape Town’s Electricity Generation and Distribution Department is cautioning residents about individuals posing as city electricity officials to commit theft.
According to a City statement, there have been reports of scammers operating in the Sanddrift area. These imposters claimed to be from the City’s Electricity Department and gained entry to a resident’s home under false pretences.
In one incident, two scammers entered a resident’s home on the pretext of inspecting electricity prepaid meters. While inside, they stole items while the resident was distracted.
Residents, particularly the elderly, are urged to remain vigilant. Legitimate City electricity staff and contractors conduct their work with identification and will introduce themselves before requesting access to properties.
Xanthea Limberg, Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, emphasised that legitimate staff and contractors carry identification cards displaying the City logo, their full name, and a photo. She also advised against aggressive actions towards genuine City personnel conducting meter readings or essential electricity infrastructure work in neighbourhoods.
The City appreciates residents’ vigilance and encourages them to verify any doubts about personnel by contacting the City directly.
