According to Newzroom Afrika, the raid was led by Correctional Services National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale after the video posted by inmate Bornface Banks went viral.
The Zimbabwean inmate at Goodwood Correctional Centre has stirred controversy by posting videos on TikTok, showcasing what he describes as a comfortable life behind bars.
Banks, who goes by BonyBanks Kayz on TikTok, flaunted his prison experience, stating he’s ‘fine in prison’ despite being on remand for serious charges, including murder, kidnapping, extortion and robbery.
In one clip, Banks casually showed fellow inmates enjoying a board game. Acknowledging the illegality of having a cellphone in prison, he said, ‘I am a criminal anyway’.
In an amusing reshare, TikToker Carol Bae Imone reposted Banks’ original video and then cut to another video of the inmate after the raid, clearly showing remorse for his blunder.

An investigation is underway to determine how Banks came into possession of a cellphone that he used to film the videos while in prison.
In total, 59 cellphones have been confiscated as contraband that is not allowed in a prison facility.
Banks has been disciplined and reclassified, meaning he has been moved into another facility with ‘more stringent measures’.
