Lilian Henderson, Director of Marketing for Southern and East Africa at BIC, highlighted the importance of the partnership: ‘Mhlongo’s story is a testament to how the right resources and support can help individuals thrive in any environment. As a brand committed to education, we believe change starts with one person who believes in you, whether it’s a teacher, organization, or parent.’
Since 2012, BIC’s ‘Buy a Pen Donate a Pen’ campaign has donated over 15 million writing tools to students in need. This year, BIC aims to reach an additional 1 million donations, encouraging consumers to contribute by purchasing pens. Donations are distributed during BIC’s annual roadshows, held from March to June.
Mhlongo expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership: ‘As a child who benefited from community support, I know the impact it can have. I want to be that support for today’s students, and I’m excited to work with BIC, a brand that understands the importance of this mission.’
BIC is committed to improving learning conditions for 250 million students globally by 2025.
In South Africa, the ‘Buy a Pen Donate a Pen’ campaign has evolved into a broader CSR platform focused on reducing the 41% high school dropout rate by ensuring students have the necessary writing tools to succeed. The collaboration with Mhlongo is a significant step in fostering positive change within South Africa.
