This is according to the Animal Welfare Society (AWS) which is appealing to residents of the city to assist with donations with more cold and wet conditions expected over the course of the next few days.
‘Please help our relief efforts for those affected by this terrible weather this week,’ stated the AWS.
Yesterday, teams were at Philippi Farms assisting with horses caught in the heavy rains.
All feed for them has been damaged from the floods and the AWS pleading for members of the public to please assist with donations of horse feed and hay.
Team have also been working around the clock going door-to-door in the communities in the rain and seeing dogs without shelter and educating owners.
In one incident, a distressed dog was discovered trapped on a water hyacinth beside the busy N2 motorway near Old Faure, surrounded by pouring rain and chilling winds. The severe storms in Cape Town put many animals in danger, as they are unable to find shelter from the elements.
Despite the adverse conditions, the dedicated team waded into the cold water. As they approached, the stranded dog began to wag its tail and whimper in hope, clearly recognising the arrival of its rescuers.
Inspectors Rowan Davids and Lwazi Ntungele, along with their onshore colleagues, worked flawlessly to capture the terrified dog. They carefully navigated through the water and safely transported the dog to dry land.

The dog, nicknamed River, is now under the warm and watchful care of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, where it enjoys a cosy bed and nutritious meals—a stark contrast to its recent ordeal.
‘This rescue highlights the vital role of our Inspectors and the critical need for community support,’ said the organisation. ‘The SPCA’s efforts to save and protect animals rely heavily on your generosity. The team also requires essential equipment to conduct such life-saving operations effectively.’
‘We urge you to open your hearts and contribute what you can to aid in these noble efforts, ensuring that no animal is left behind in their time of need.’
