According to the Western Cape Department of Education (WCED), over 100 schools have reported damages due to inclement weather conditions that have swept across the province since last week.
‘Over the past few days, 137 schools have reported some form of damage to infrastructure, either due to flooding or heavy winds,’ David Maynier, Western Cape minister of education, said in a statement on Wednesday.
‘The majority of the cases are minor, while 49 cases require our urgent attention.’
In a statement, Head of Education Brent Walters says the decision to close schools on Thursday was taken ‘in the interests of learner and educator safety’.
‘A level 8 weather warning has been issued by the SAWS for certain parts of the province, affecting the Metro, Cape Winelands, Overberg and West Coast districts. An intense cold front is moving in over parts of these regions, bringing with it significant amounts of rainfall over these areas on Thursday, 11 July 2024.’
‘Due to the soil already being saturated, there is concern that the heavy rainfall will cause run-off and further flooding,’ Walters said.
School closures will take place in the following areas on 11 July 2024:
- All ordinary public and special schools in the Metro South, Metro Central, Metro North and Metro East Education Districts
- All ordinary public and special schools in the Cape Winelands Education Districts
- All ordinary public and special schools in the Overberg Education Districts
- Circuit 1 and 2 schools in the West Coast Education District
- All remaining schools in the West Coast District and the Eden and Central Karoo District will be open.
Walters adds that all learner transport to these schools and areas will be suspended on Thursday and recommended that all Early Childhood Development centres follow suit.
‘All schools are scheduled to reopen on 12 July 2024,’ he says. ‘Should we be advised of further risks in any of the districts we will communicate continued closure, if necessary.’
