Stellenbosch University has been profoundly impacted by a generous R50 million donation from an anonymous donor’s last will and testament.

The gift has been allocated to support talented undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Faculty of Theology and the Department of Music.
Karen Bruns, Senior Director of Development and Alumni Relations, highlighted the transformative power of philanthropy in action.
‘While we would have liked to publicly honour this foresighted donor, we respect their wish to remain anonymous. We are immensely grateful. This gift of education will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy.’
Hugo Steyn, acting director of Principal Giving, detailed that the R50 million will specifically fund bursaries for financially disadvantaged students in theology and music.
‘These funds will be invested to create a sustainable income stream, benefiting numerous students for years to come. We aim to begin awarding bursaries from 2025, ensuring that talented individuals can pursue their academic ambitions without financial barriers.’
Professor Reggie Nel, dean of the Faculty of Theology, underscored the donation’s significance in fostering rigorous academic study and leadership formation within religious communities.
‘This legacy will impact generations by promoting dialogue across disciplines and worldviews, serving the common good in our country and continent.’
Professor Mario Nell, chairman of the Department of Music, highlighted the crucial role of these bursaries in supporting aspiring musicians.
‘They will help break down financial barriers, promote equality of opportunity, and cultivate excellence in the arts, enriching our community through cultural contributions.’
Professor Wim de Villiers, vice-chancellor and rector of the university, expressed deep appreciation for the donor’s vision and commitment to higher education in South Africa.
‘This generous gift will enable talented students to pursue their academic dreams without financial worries, inspiring future generations.’
