The Melkbosstrand Neighbourhood Watch stresses the importance of personal safety by being aware of your surroundings and taking proactive steps. They offer these tips:
- Stay alert, especially when walking alone or in unfamiliar areas.
- Trust your instincts and leave situations that feel off.
- Keep valuables hidden.
- Inform someone of your whereabouts and expected return time.
- Plan your route and use well-lit, populated areas.
- Keep personal items secure.
- Consider taking a self-defence class.
- Save important phone numbers for emergencies.
- Monitor your alcohol intake to maintain control and awareness.
- Ensure all entrance doors and safety gates are locked, even when at home.
In addition, Table View police urge residents to remain cautious following an attack on a family on Cabernet Road in Table View. Intruders entered through an unlocked door, demanded valuables, and ransacked the house before fleeing.
Table View police spokesperson, Captain Adriana Chandler, recommends these security measures:
- Close windows and activate alarms, even for short absences.
- Reverse your vehicle into the driveway to monitor for intruders and enable a quick getaway. Keep car doors locked.
- Verify the identity of anyone seeking access to your property.
- Remove shrubs or obstacles where criminals can hide.
- Stay vigilant and report suspicious activity to authorities.
- Contact your security company, neighbourhood watch, and police for additional security tips.
- Report burglaries immediately to the police and your security company.
- Join local neighbourhood watches and attend community forums to stay informed on crime trends and safety advice.
