Heavy winds and rainfall have damaged at least 29 schools in the Western Cape, with three schools on the West Coast having their roofs blown off, according to Bronagh Hammond, spokesperson for the Western Cape education department.

‘The department is assessing the damage and is in contact with the schools to determine their needs and make arrangements for continued teaching and learning,’ Hammond said.
Despite the damage, Hammond confirmed that schools would open as planned on Tuesday for the start of the third term. She noted that the department had consulted with the South African Weather Service (SAWS) and the provincial disaster management committee, and all schools would be open.
However, requests for closure due to road inaccessibility may be considered for individual schools, depending on the extent of the overnight rainfall damage.
The SA Weather Service has forecasted the next cold front to make landfall on Tuesday, bringing between 10 and 20mm of rain over the western parts of the province and between 40 and 60mm over the south-western mountains.
