Born from humble beginnings, BROKE has transformed from a streetwear label into a cultural phenomenon, celebrating misfits and rebels while inspiring the relentless pursuit of dreams.
The story of BROKE is rooted in real-life experiences, inspired by a group of friends who dared to dream big despite adversity. Founded in 2016 by high school friends, siblings, and kindred spirits from the township, BROKE emerged from their shared struggles.
Despite financial limitations, they were determined to infiltrate Cape Town’s affluent streets.
Driven by a profound purpose, they sought to represent township voices within the city’s cultural landscape.
Andile Dhlamini, dubbed the ‘Original Kaapstad Pantsula,’ leads a dynamic team at BROKE, including Mzwandile Sithole (International Pantsula), Sindiso Tshuma (Insert Coinz), Hlumelo Gosa (Rosco Steazy), Akhona Beja (IamSlolo), and Simbongile Bino, each playing pivotal roles from DJing to brand management and event coordination.
These six core members, aged between 25 and 30, brought their talents to BROKE, transforming it from a custom t-shirt brand into a cross-cultural creative agency with significant influence.
Central to BROKE’s identity is its signature baseball cap—a six-panel twill design featuring the embroidered letter ‘B’. Originally conceived as an accessible entry-level product, it has evolved into an iconic symbol of the BROKE ethos.
Beyond fashion, BROKE has partnered strategically, including collaborations with brandy distiller Klipdrift.
