Amid the bustling energy of a large family – he’s the second eldest of four – football emerged as his undeniable passion and purpose.

Tashreeq Matthews embarked on his soccer journey at the tender age of four.
‘As a young boy, you’re always watching football. My goal was to become a footballer,’ he reminisces.
By 11, he had earned a place at Ajax Cape Town academy, renowned across South Africa and Africa.
‘Once you’re in the system, it brings you closer to going pro,’ Matthews reflects. ‘But over time, you realise that becoming a professional isn’t easy. It takes hard work and the right mentality.’
Growing up in Hanover Park, a community grappling with social and economic difficulties, Tashreeq valued having a strong support network.
‘Many kids come from disadvantaged areas. Support from family, friends, and self-belief are crucial. Knowing right from wrong and making the right choices is key.’
Playing against older kids from an early age provided Tashreeq with a distinct advantage. ‘Being with older age groups always gave me an edge because of the challenges they presented,’ he explains.
This exposure to higher levels of competition helped him cultivate skills and a mindset that distinguished him from his peers.
However, Tashreeq’s journey wasn’t without its challenges.
Returning to South Africa after playing in Europe was a pivotal decision. Competing in prestigious tournaments like the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in America, featuring teams such as Real Madrid and Liverpool, fulfils a lifelong dream for Tashreeq.
For aspiring young people looking to emulate his path, Tashreeq shares sincere advice.
‘Not everyone’s dream of becoming a professional footballer will materialise. But with hard work, a strong mentality, and unwavering encouragement, it can happen,’ he affirms.
