According to News24, the feeding programme operates daily on weekdays, including school holidays, starting meal distribution at noon each school day with pre-packed meals.
Additionally, this initiative extends support by providing an additional 100 meals to a different area in Elsies River.
Last week, the extra meals were served in Epping Forest and Avonwood.
‘On Saturday we served the extra 100 meals in The Range,’ says the principal of Elnor Primary School, Mark Agulhus.
‘Serving these meals go very quick as children are very hungry and in need of a cooked meal.’
Agulhus says the need is growing every day.
Since Covid-19 in 2020, the initiative has consistently expanded its reach. Each year, the number of meals has increased to meet growing needs.
‘One person asked us for an extra meal on Friday and alluded that it was her first meal since the previous evening. It broke my heart to see how this community is suffering,’ says Agulhus.
Agulhus emphasised that a school is the heart of the community.
‘Our learners come from this community, and they are the future of this community. If you have hungry children, they will find a way to get food if it is legal or not. We know that a child that is fed can perform to the best of his ability.’
