The incident occurred on Youth Day, 16 June, and involved a six-year-old boy.
The officer, who works in the Forensic Science Laboratory, had the boy and his mother over to his residence. During the visit, the officer and the boy’s mother consumed alcohol, causing her to fall asleep on the couch. While she was asleep, the officer raped the child.
The boy later confided in a community member about the incident, leading to the case being reported to IPID. IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping confirmed the sequence of events and the subsequent arrest of the officer.
The perpetrator appeared in court before his arrest and the case has been postponed to 1 July to allow time for a formal bail application. The officer remains in custody.
