‘There’s no doubt they will get no fewer than five ministerial positions,’ a source close to the negotiations confirmed.
The agreement stipulates mutual support for each party’s parliamentary candidates. The DA backed Thoko Didiza for Speaker of the National Assembly, while the ANC will support Annelie Lotriet for Deputy Speaker.
During a recent press briefing, DA leader John Steenhuisen clarified that while no specific deal was struck regarding ministerial posts, proportionality would be a key factor in Cabinet appointments.
Steenhuisen emphasised that discussions on departmental allocations to the DA are ongoing.
‘We’re following a phased approach, starting with the initial phase we’ve just signed. The next phase will focus on policy and Cabinet positions,’ Steenhuisen explained.
He stressed the DA’s insistence on broad consensus and proportionality in their negotiations with the ANC.
The GNU agreement also includes the IFP and was signed by party representatives following intense negotiations after the recent national election, which saw the ANC lose its majority.
Fikile Mbalula signed on behalf of the ANC, with Helen Zille representing the DA during the signing ceremony at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
Steenhuisen acknowledged potential disagreements among political parties, noting, ‘Voters have called for an end to finger-pointing. Our country faces significant challenges like unemployment, crime, and deteriorating infrastructure. We must not underestimate the obstacles ahead in forming a government of national unity.’
