Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has received the list of names of individuals who will make up the country’s Member of Parliament (MP) in the National Assembly (NA), and Member of Provincial Legislature (MPL).
The list was handed to Zondo from the IEC chairperson, Mosotho Moepya.

This follows after the national and provincial elections, that was held on May 29, were declared ‘free and fair’ by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), as reported by IOL.
The list will then soon be handed to Xolile George, the Secretary to Parliament, in preparation for the first sitting of the NA as well as ‘the names of those who will make up the nine provincial legislatures’, for their first sittings.
From these lists, a president and premiers will be elected at the sitting, which must take place 14 days after the election’s results are made public, according to Professor Pierre de Vos, constitutional law expert.
This could only be affected by court action to prevent any swearing-in attempts, De Vos told in an interview with Newzroom Afrika.
The process is still in progress, but despite concerns that have been raised following the elections, this does not stop the formal declaration of results and the process that follows, according to De Vos.
Zondo has explained that the first sitting of Parliament will be announced, along with the sittings of various legislatures.
This also includes the sitting of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) and then the inauguration of the president, deputy president and ministers.
No date has been set on when Parliament’s first sitting will take place, as of yet.
