Police were called out to the scene in Ou Kaapse Weg on Thursday, 30 May, as confirmed by Brigadier Donovan Heilbron, deputy district police commissioner in the Overberg.
‘When authorities arrived at the scene on an open field, they discovered the lifeless body of an unknown male lying on his stomach. The victim had been badly assaulted and was also set alight,’ said Heilbron.
‘It is rumoured that the community accused the victim of breaking in but there were no reports of burglaries or break-ins in that area shortly before the incident,’ he added.
Heilbron further cautioned the community not to take the law into their own hands and become involved in incidents of mob justice that could lead to criminal charges against them.
‘Please report crime to the police and let the law run its course,’ said Heilbron.
