The State prosecutor objected to bail, and the suspect is scheduled to appear in court next month. According to a staff member, the suspect was apprehended at the Crawford campus residence. Approximately nine students visited the Athlone police station to file sexual harassment complaints against the individual.
Demonstrations against the purported sexual harassment by the residence supervisor commenced on Friday, with students from both the City and Thornton campuses participating. As per the source, the College principal suspended the residence supervisor on Thursday, preceding the arrest.
‘Apparently the principal appointed him to this post last year without following the proper recruitment process. No criminal checks, etc.’
A previous staff member, who chose to remain anonymous, revealed that students would personally message him, expressing discomfort with the residence.
The college principal and CEO, Dr Manager Mhangarai Muswaba, verified that students reported the Crawford campus residence supervisor for allegedly engaging in inappropriate relationships with students.
According to IOL, the employee was suspended without pay pending investigations due to the severity of the allegations. The case was escalated to the Department of Higher Education and Training, and an independent investigator from a related college was assigned to probe the issue.
