Former president Jacob Zuma’s supporters have showered him with gifts after gathering outside his Nkandla home on Thursday to celebrate “nine wonderful and most progressive years in the history of our democracy”.
According to IOL, supporters said that his Presidency allowed black people to advance economically, and vowed to show the country that his tenure was of value.
This ‘appreciation event’ saw people thanking Zuma, adding that he spent his time giving back to the poor (with reference to hosting events for people around Christmas time), but now it was his turn to receive gifts.
Some of Zuma’s administration described his term in office as “nine wasted years”, and the reference to “nine wonderful years” is likely a jab at public comments, News24 reports.
Zuma was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment after failing to comply with the Constitutional Court order, which compelled him to testify at the State Capture Inquiry.
He was admitted to hospital in August soon after his prison term started, and medical parole was requested thereafter.
The National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Arthur Fraser, revealed that he overruled the Medical Parole Advisory Board to grant medical parole to Zuma.
However, the former president was recently ordered to go back to jail, and according to the ruling, Fraser’s decision to place Zuma on medical parole on September 5 was reviewed and declared unlawful.
“It is declared that the time the third respondent was out of jail on medical parole should not be counted for the fulfilment of the third respondent’s sentence of 15 months imposed by the Constitutional Court,” the judgment read.
